I’ve been at NVIDIA for over eight years, and have always been an avid gamer. I love playing games, regardless of the platform. At home I own a PC, XBOX 360, PS2, PS3, Wii, PSP, Nintendo DS, iPod Touch, and the new Zune HD. What can I say — I’m still a big kid at heart.
One of the reasons I love working at NVIDIA is that we build the best GPUs for gaming. The people who work here play games and talk about games, and making PC games better is our passion. It’s why we invest in things like PhysX, 3D Vision, and why we’re working with Microsoft on the latest DX spec.
Lately, I’ve read a few articles saying we don’t care about graphics or gaming anymore. All I can say is, WOW. If you only knew how passionate we are about these very things. Like I said, we are all gamers and enthusiasts at the core and love building stuff that we can use ourselves.
To show what a geek I am, I’ll use my favorite quote from Spider Man, “With great power comes great responsibility.” I think as a company that has some of the world’s brightest engineers, it would be a crime to not use that knowledge to make the world a better place. I know this sounds cheesy, but I don’t care.
GT200 is a bigger GPU than RV770. This isn’t a secret and we don’t try to hide it. We added cost to our GPU to support compute applications, and we invented CUDA so the world could use those extra transistors. By doing so, we helped enable companies like Techniscan build a device that detects breast cancer earlier in a safe and painless way. One in eight women will have breast cancer their lifetime. I’m married and have two little girls. If our GPUs can help keep them healthier, then that’s really cool.
As we introduce our next generation architecture code-named Fermi, we’re focusing even more on building better computational GPUs. Will we still have the world’s best gaming graphics? Absolutely! But we will also enable scientists and researchers to use the power of our GPUs to do incredible things.
This is what gets me excited about working at NVIDIA. We build GPUs that make games come alive. But these very same GPUs will hopefully one day make the world a better place.
