“Most types of applications are automatically detected by Optimus and do not need a profile. [...] many video applications fall in to this category because the GPU knows when they make their calls to the GPU, such as:
DX Calls: Any 3D game engine or DirectX application will trigger these calls”
“However, certain applications need a profile to help determine which graphics system it should utilize. Most games and certain multimedia applications fall into this category.”
What? This is a contradiction. Games don’t need profiles because they are DX calls that are automatically detected. Games do need profiles.

    Not all games are DX.

Will the optimus work on the NVS 3100m?

  • Sasha Ostojic (NVIDIA)

Correct, not all games are DX (for example, some are OpenGL). The goal of Optimus is to use the best device for the job, and some apps are simple enough such that IGP is good enough. NVIDIA sets an app profile to GPU only after going thru a validation process to make sure the app behaves as expected the app benefits from GPU acceleration (in terms of performance and visual quality). For example, there is no need to power on the GPU for say a 3D Chess game, even if it is DX.

For existing hardware, is it (theoretically) possible to get “Optimus” support only via drivers? For instance on a device which has a CPU with Intel graphics (e.g. Core i5) + a supported NVidia graphics card but which only supports the external graphics card (e.g. the device does not have switchable graphics)?

ah Sasha so you imply that games don’t need affirmative profile entries, rather, games you DON’T want accelerated need profiles to explicitly DISABLE acceleration.
if that is what you meant then that makes what you said make sense

This is my big question too. I have an IGP on my i5. I have a 330M GPU. Switchable graphics aren’t currently enabled on my laptop. Is optimus something that can possibly give me switchable graphics, or is there some additional bios and/or hardware requirements I missed in the slides?

Well I have something else. Because of weak support on the tech forum, I’ll write it here. Nvidia Optimus, as much as it is great idea, is full of gliches. Lots of games just doesn’t work because of intel HD, which i set in Windows 7 as primary GPU, Which leads to situation where Nvidia GPU can’t even kick in, because the game DOESN”T EVEN START! Check yours new shiny ASUS notebooks and tell me how many games can you actually even start from the period 2007 till now. In addition to games which will be written in link below I’ll write you one here. The Witcher. Game of the year on pc as I recall. It doesn’t start, shows that GPU is BELOW minimum reqs. And no, changing gpu in nvidia panel doesn’t do a thing. I don’t really care about titles that will show up and support Optimus technology. I care about games that are already here! I hope the tech help will show up in http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=163906 and answer some questions. Thank you in advance.
