Great story Brian… My son is 5 and is a wiz at Star Wars Lego – it won’t be long til I am unseated as the house champion in gaming… Thanks for sharing!
    Cheers,
    Ian

This is exactly the kind of thing I was asking parents to do in my PAX East speech. http://www.stepto.com/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=610
Thanks Mr. Burke. That makes me feel great.

    Thanks Ian,
A good tip for that fateful day when you lose to him in video
games for the first time: Immediately challenge him to a game of basketball.
It will quickly fix your ego and reestablish the pecking order around the house..

I think it’s disgusting you allow your ‘baby’ to play a mature rated game – maybe you should consider the implications of this?

    Thanks.
I missed PAX this year, being on the notebook stuff now, but
heard it was great. I just read your speech, and it was
    great.
BTW, please do not reset his gamer score. He has
seen the error of his ways besides, he would never forgive me for
    outing him.

    Thanks for the feedback.
I do not blindly let him play whatever he wants. We have
lots of games he cant play… the GTA Series at the top of them. The
rating is a guideline, not a law. Know your kids and what they can
    handle.
He is well-rounded, social and just made a perfect score on his
reading and math TAKS tests. He is in all AP classes and his lowest grade
on his report card is a 96. 2 month ago his teacher called to let us know
that he stepped in and sharply corrected some kids that were making fun of one
of the autistic boys in his class.
I think am doing ok. I am pretty sure a little COD wont
    ruin him.

Very nice article. It’s always awesome to see parents getting involved with their kids and their games, especially on this level.
I’m currently trying to teach my 10 year old that “dancing” on dead players is not a nice thing to do!

Thanks for sharing!!!!, i dont have sons, but it must be very grateful to see the way that they learn to play and how we can teach them to play and respect!!

At what age did you let kids start playing games such as MW?

We take it on a game-by-game basis. Anything they play
requires my approval. What they play and when varies based on each
    kid.

Hahah yep, I completely understand where you’re coming from.
I never “let” my kids win at anything, and it led to frustration at first, but when they got skilled enough to beat me at things (and then surpassed my skill level), it became a great source of pride and accomplishment.
Now, I can’t even be bothered to challenge my boys in 2D fighters like Tatsunoko vs. Capcom or Tekken, because… well, it’s too embarrassing.

    Stepto,
I was at PAX, but am sorry I missed your session. Thanks for pointing us to it what you said. Good stuff.
