While i know the Quadro and Telsa boards are great and designed for the proffesional (trust me i’d love to have the first mentioned setup) many of us budget amatuers can’t even consider affording them. A used overclocked 480GTX rocks my system pretty quick. You have to also consider the “beginners” that also like to game as well and have dual purpose machines. Any of your GPU’s that carry over 1 gb of ram and 300+cuda cores and at least 256 bus will out perform a low end quadro and still allow for great gaming. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the comment. If GeForce meets your needs, then that’s a great solution.  There’s no question you’ll get solid performance.  However, many Adobe CS6 users are businesses that depend on Premiere Pro, After Effects SpeedGrade and other CS6 tools for their livelihood.  For these creative pros, Quadro is the right choice because of the additional time NVIDIA spends developing, testing and qualifying these GPUs with professional applications like Adobe CS6 to ensure users get the most reliable and capable solutions.  NVIDIA does not qualify GeForce GPUs with CS6 products.

The question to ask is whether downtime could cost more than the price difference of the GPU. For businesses working to meet critical deadlines with highly paid designers or artists, the answer is almost always “Yes“.  On top of that, note that Adobe certifies nearly all NVIDIA professional Quadro solutions, but only a few of the GeForce products.

I am a Mac user and pro editor with 5 FCP 7 systems in my charge.  Most of these systems are used as edit systems but each project requires After Effects work.  We are going to upgrade to new Mac Pros and I would like to included the best GPU cards.  After reading your post I am not sure which GPU card to go with.  How about recommending one.

    Thanks,
    Scott

NVIDIA ships the Quadro 4000 for Mac and that’s the board you should use with the Mac Pro. Check out the specs here http://www.nvidia.com/object/product-quadro-4000-mac-us.html

Dave, Great post. There is a sector of Freelance Editors that are mainly cutting on MacBook Pro’s and are not ready to move to let’s say move to an HP Tower or Laptop that really utilizes the power of NiVida Cards and CS6. Will we see the ability to place and nvidia card in a Thunderbolt casing

I am an average editor about to switch from FCP 7 to PPCS6 on a 12 core Mac Pro.  I wish I could afford a brand new card, but the older GT285 card that was authorized by Apple is affordable. Is it worth the investment?

The GTX 285 has been officially discontinued (big mistake) by NvIdia but there is an aftermarket: Amazon sellers, eBay sellers, etc. That seems to be a good choice, if you can find a real one “FOR MAC,” not one that’s “just like it” which has been flashed by some backroom genius from a PC edition. Watch out for those, they are generally less than 200.00, and simply not guaranteed to work.
