A new kind of open gaming device needs a new kind of development process.

Rather than being secretive about SHIELD and what it can do, we decided to bring gamers in on the conspiracy, announcing our plan to bring a portable gaming device with console-class controls and a high-def 5-inch screen to market in January at the Consumer Electronics Show.

Most of all, we wanted this device to be open and provide the best possible experience—whether you’re playing Android or PC games, or enjoying your favorite movies, music, and other apps on the go.

Since then, we’ve put SHIELD in the hands of thousands of gamers. Some have been professional press. Others have been inside our own company. But most have been people like the tens of thousands who streamed through our booth at PAX East and E3.

And their reactions have been more than just positive.

They’ve helped us build a better product. Feedback from gamers is why SHIELD’s triggers have the perfect throw length. Why SHIELD’s buttons have just the right amount of give. Why SHIELD’s thumb sticks are so satisfying to flick. Why playing games on SHIELD’s pure Android software feels so slick.

The result: while SHIELD isn’t available until June 27th – we’re making that official today – it’s already grabbed awards by the fistful – including dozens of ‘Best of Show’ awards at CES, Computex and E3.

Now it’s time for one more change.

We’ve heard from thousands of gamers that if the price was $299, we’d have a home run.

So we’re changing the price of SHIELD to $299.

If you’ve already pre-ordered SHIELD, you’ll be charged the new, lower price. You will only be charged $299 when the product ships.

We want to get SHIELD into the hands of as many gamers as possible.

That’s because we think they’ll have the same reaction to it as thousands of gamers already have: joy.

    STOP TEMPTING ME damn it.

  • Kickass667

will retailers also be selling it on the 27th?

  • http://www.facebook.com/Kjekkassen Robin Martinsen

Omg so cheap on 299$ Made me so happy!

  • Brian_Caulfield

    ;-)

  • Brian_Caulfield

It has a very nice speaker system and it can power a 4k display. ;-)

  • mysanityfading

“whoa.” “no way, no way! this is crazy.”

  • Renaud Lepage

    nnnnnnngh.

The shipping to Canada kills it though. Newegg.ca would ship the unit for near a third of the shipping cost from nVidia, but if you’re going to support the SHIELD anything like the Play Store supports the Nexuses… I’d rather order from nV direct.

  • Renaud Lepage

Also? It comes out on my birthday.

    NOT HELPING.

  • Chairman Meow

When is it coming to the UK?

  • Vincent DuDouze

Is there a usb port to add mouse and keyboard in order to play FPS ?

  • ResonanceCascade

Well crap, guess I’m getting one. Don’t tell my wife.

  • http://danielwaltz.me/ TheDark

Ahhh, if only I had a 600 series card… I would get one of these in a heartbeat.

  • Brian_Caulfield

Your secret is safe with me.

  • dragonthc

If you had the ability to get one of these in a heartbeat, you have the ability to get a 600 series card.

  • http://danielwaltz.me/ TheDark

Thing is I have a 580, so the only logical upgrade would be the 680, 770, or 780… all of which I have no money for.

  • Dominick DeBellis

Really looking for a bundle here.  I’d get one in a heartbeat if I had a supported graphics card to play the games from the PC… the GTX650 series or whatever.  But I have an older card.  Like I said, a bundle or a promo for a supported card would get you another bump in sales, guaranteed.

  • marcx

Agreed on the garaphics card issues–I have a 560 Ti in my PC and soinfg the card upgrade and the shiel dpurchase keeps it out of my reach….a

  • Patrick Hartweg

Then why don’t you just play on the PC?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1699975768 Ulrik Asp

    nice

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001232036437 Mac Rees

Can we have the price in pounds? I can’t seem to find a reliable source and I’m assuming that the exchange to pounds is going to almost be 1/1.

  • http://www.facebook.com/kenley.brewer Kenley Brewer

The 580 is still a very good card

  • Slam9999

i would say around 170 pounds

  • Miguel Concepcion

    AGREE

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001232036437 Mac Rees

I don’t think it would be that, as you see with other products, it never goes with the true exchange rate, and is rather biased against other currencies.

  • Sarah Pedersen

Thanks for reducing the price tag, Nvidia :D
Now I can get my hands on the Shield earlier than I anticipated^^
As af hardcore pc gamer I cannot wait to get my hands on this handheld console, which in my opinion have the power, graphics, an open platform and so on.
Though I still have a question to us folks over here in Europe, when is the shield expected to come out?
Besides from that, you are doing great with your fantastic products.
    Keep up the good work.
    Btw Nvidia ftw!

  • Amer1ka

When are you going to release of compatible titles?  Or did I miss that?  If a good portion of my Steam library was compatible with the system you’d have my pre-order instantly.

  • http://danielwaltz.me/ TheDark

Oh yes, it’s lovely. My reasoning for getting a 600 series or above is so I can stream games to the Shield, which is the only reason for me to pick one up. Currently previous generation cards do not support it. If my 580 did support game streaming I would feel no need to upgrade… the 580 still handles todays games like a beast.

I was thinking the same think :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/rohara3 Ryan O’Hara

    aa

  • http://www.facebook.com/rohara3 Ryan O’Hara

So….if i preordered using paypal, and the money was already taken from
my paypal, i should expect it back? like….$100 or whatever into my
    paypal account?

  • http://www.facebook.com/danny.jasperse Danny Jasperse

Xbox one ,ps4 or a schield hmm going to be a hard choice deciding between 2 of them :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/computermouth Ben Young

There’s also nVidia Shadowplay in the next week or so. On paper it sounds like the best video cap tool ever created.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1140795417 Aaron Westlake

That was the cherry on top!

  • Zach Kirk

Great news on the price drop. Proud to say I was one of the gamers who used a shield at PAX and provided my feedback. I was hoping it would release this week because I’m leaving on vacation the 28th and wanted my shield! Guess it will be waiting for me when I get back :-)

  • http://www.facebook.com/Christopherjamesrobertsarka Christopher Sarka

     PS4 and Shield. Undoubtedly.

  • Daumus

So get a GTX660, it’s cheap and it’s pretty much as fast as GTX580.

  • http://danielwaltz.me/ TheDark

I don’t want to spend $280 for around the same level of performance… that’s just not worth it.

  • http://hip1blog.blogspot.com/ HiP

“We want to get SHIELD into the hands of as many gamers as possible.”

If this statement was true, you would have included Europe for the launch…

  • Daumus

280$ ? Bummer, i bought mine 6 months ago when it came out for 230$. You could always sell your 580 and add some small amount for 660.

  • domahman

I’m a long time console guy, but now that all gaming systems are moving to x86, I’m moving to PC gaming to take advantage of the better graphics.  I’ll soon build my pc.  I’m hoping you can package this or provide a coupon of some sort for your next generation GPU.  Buy a Shield+discount on GPU or vice versa.

  • domahman

Nintendo and Shield because PS4 and XBox One games will be on the PC.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Joselyro José Luis

$299 to play Android games? you must be joking.

  • http://www.facebook.com/paulandtonyacomputerrepair Paul Lightfoot

i got 2x 680’s and my shield is pre-purchased, IM READY!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=604904504 Micah Cuevas

Have two titans and can’t wait to get my Shield

  • domahman

save money and buyout Nintendo in a few years…screw the dividend. release Zelda and Mario in the cloud on the grid.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ElConquistidor Steven Quada

The 580 is definitely showing it’s age.  I couldn’t play Metro Last Light with it. EVGA GTX 780 Superclocked

  • Calder Whiteley

You guys are lucky, I’m still on the GTX 9800+.  Well…two of them in SLI…but still.  Wish I had the $$$ for a 700 series.

  • Tommy

I just bought a Vita but oh well, you’ve twisted my arm, that’s a fair price.

  • justin betts

If you were charged through PayPal, you will be refunded the difference.

  • halo

when it’s release for indian market

  • http://www.facebook.com/gab.campbell Gab Campbell

Guys make your own home console we need nVidia to be in the race and make a real console (no facebook, no camera, none of that bullshit) Just a standardized gaming powerhouse. Partner with Intel and take advantage of your awesome technologies like CUDA and PhysX we need you guys!

  • Daniel

I can’t wait for this. I just wish it supported Laptop GPUs like the GTX 660m

  • dr_time

Yes because nobody pays twice that for a phone that plays Android games.

  • nccvoyager

I’m running a GEFORCE 9400GT… I managed to get Metro running well on it, and even managed to get Skyrim, while not very well, running on it. It all depends on what sacrifices you’re willing to make… I play many newer games at the lowest settings and resolution possible.

  • king of noobis

i usually play on my xbox and i also have a pc with a 2 gb geforce 9400 gt. And i’m going to buy the shield so i wanted to know if i would be able to stream some pc games on the shield. And nvida if u are reading this try to work with xbox to stream games from the xbox one to the shield. And i also live in Lebanon so i wanted to know if i can buy this console in the midle east.AND I WANT GRID ON THE SHIELDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • king of noobis

    GIVE ME ONEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  • king of noobis

and ii run starcraft 2 on ultra settings

  • Brian_Caulfield

SHIELD has a micro-USB port and Bluetooth (in case you have a Bluetooth friendly mouse and keyboard). You’ll find all the specs, here –> http://shield.nvidia.com/portable-features/

  • Brian_Caulfield

Stay tuned to shield.nvidia.com for all the latest. http://shield.nvidia.com/play-pc-games/

Many, many thanks for your feedback!

  • Bob Huntington

This product looks VERY awesome, but I would love to play PilotWings 64 on it, while commuting to and from my work!   I wish I could take my PilotWings 64 game cartridge, and plug it directly into this thing.   I wish all of the action and backgrounds would be smooth and crystal clear, on that gorgeous 5″ HD color screen!   Then, if I could plug in my stereo headphones, and hear the crystal clear music and sound effects, which are produced by the game, my bus ride would fly by!!!   Please tell me that someone else has thought of this!   Thanks.

  • http://www.facebook.com/danny.jasperse Danny Jasperse

You guessed it ,not a hair on my ass is even considering to buy an xbox

  • Gothalion

What the fuck Nvidia. Why does Newegg say 8/15 now for release date. Also, I already got charged through you guys. So I better god damned get my shield this week

  • GDM

Was really looking forward to this, now that you’ve all of a sudden (less than a week after telling everyone it’s out of the 27th!) pushed the date back to mid august, you lost me. Preorder cancelled. Sorry guys, letting the ship date slip a week, ok mayyyyybe… Letting it slip nearly 2 months and not saying anything at all about it? That’s pretty bad! Ps4 it is i guess! No money for nvidia, which is a shame because i was actually thinkinh of buying an nvidia rig JUST so i can stream games to my shield!

  • Brian Milligan

Where did they say that they pushed back orders?

  • GDM

apparently there’s a tweet from @evleaks:twitter  about it as well, but here’s one of the threads that started it all:
    https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/548429/project-shield/release-date-change/

  • Brian Milligan

I think its a bit rash to cancel your preorder based on that.  Hopefully they are on schedule, ordered mine direct from NVIDIA.

  • discobrisco

299 is for pc quality streaming and android games on a handheld. The galaxy s 4 is at least double that anyway.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000478092652 Jonathan Gibbs

Can anyone tell me why newegg is now showing ship date at 8/15/2013 had this on pre order for a solid 2 months wtf is going on nvidia?
