Steffee’s Blog - Crysis: Mission Complete!

Touchdown!  With slightly less grace than Plaxico the previous week, late Sunday night with Red Nectar and Hot Pocket in hand I finally finished Crysis.  Now I’m looking for my next FPS (help me decide by participating in the poll!), but I’ll give you a brief run-down of my Crysis experience.

First part of the game – loved it!   The one-on-one, person-to-person combat was great.  I even enjoyed The Core, and I found the graphics in this soupy world amazing.

While challenging to get past the floating aliens (my shooting skills are still soSteffee_crysis2_7 immature I had to cloak invisible, wait till the aliens got close, and then pummel them with my fists.  Fun!), the graphics in here were impressive enough that I would often travel right up to walls to look at the details.

My enthusiasm started to wane after The Core.  For me, the VTOL experience was painful at best.    This is the point in the game where I was very very close to giving up.  So, I decided to the venture out into the “real world” in a Quick Game and enjoyed my first live frags.   Realizing I was becoming an easy target and discovering what a “hack” is, I played for only a couple hours after being mercilessly frozen by Nomad3.… (It was surprising how many people used some unoriginal variation of “Nomad” as a handle!  Where’s the creativity, people?!)

After my entertaining multi-player experience, I was ready to finish the game the next weekend.  Numerous visits Alt-Tabbing to game guides - including MyCheats, IGN, and GameSpot – helped me conquer the VTOL, and I was determined that I would finish the game the same night.   It took quite a while to get through the flooded lower deck, but eventually I made it back to the deck and conquered “the boss”.  I hopped in the VTOL with Helena, watched the screen fade to black and the here’s what I was expecting to see on- screen:

You Beat Crysis!

or…

Congratulations!

or…

You Finished the Game!

or even…

You Rock!

Something! Anyway, no kudos…just some closing credits and the pic I took with a self-timer because everyone else in my house was long asleep.

Now that I’ve conquered my first beast, I’m ready for my next FPS, and it’s up to you to decide.  We’ve compiled a short list of some of the top all-time favorite FPS games.  Help me decide by clicking on your favorite.

Thanks everyone, and keep the comments coming – especially the n00b ones pointing out the obvious!  ;)

I'd go with FEAR since you haven't played it yet. (Slo-mo too since you're not the best shot) The art direction is the best I've ever seen. (Play at night with a good head set like the Medusa 5.1's and make sure to turn off the lights.) It's sure to push the limits on your cards as well.

You can play straight through COD4 in one sitting. I wasn't too impressed with it. The graphics are toony compared to Crysis and don't think they were as good as FEAR was. It does have moments but didn't think it deserved the GOTY or all the hype it got. It feals forced and locks you into situations while in FEAR and Crysis you're free to roam for the most part. FEAR still tops the list as the high end FPS game though. Best AI, 2nd best graphics, and art direction that blows you away and sends chills up your spine.

if you haven't played FEAR, try it for sure.. it's really awesome, totally immersive, exciting, fun, scary.. Plus because it's getting a little older the hardware tech has caught up enough that any modern SLI system can run it maximum graphic glory.. got for it!! :D

Looks like I'll be starting COD this weekend...

COD4 then BioShock.
COD4 has moments where you will just want replay over and over again because it looks and plays that frackin' good.
Its presentation is 2nd to none.

BioShock is also fantastic but I'm more into the realistic modern type of game that COD4 is than BioShock.

Crysis had to be most disappointing game for me in a long time. All the hype.... my goodness. I kept going back to my blog complaining over and over.

You didn't need to poll. None of those games hold a candle to COD4. I just played through it. Seriously. Don't waste your time.

Hey Steffee!

Again, congrats on finishing the game. I don't think I ever took the time to finish up Crysis... probably because I recieved CoD4 and forgot about it.

CoD4 single-player campaign is awesome, I found myself playing a certain level (AC-30 gunship to be exact) over, and over, and over...

I voted for CoD4, but I also recommend F.E.A.R. The single-player is a great thriller, especially with all the "sudden" effects and ghosts. You'll have fun with this one as well.

Whichever you choose, hope you have a better experience than Crysis. I'll bet you will with CoD4!
