Oh, how I wish I had more time to both game and blog. Based on the poll, I started COD4 a couple weekends ago, but got side-tracked by a few things - work, travel, life, and most detrimental to my progress in COD4 - Guitar Hero III on my Wii. For some reason, once that plastic guitar is slung over my shoulder, my addictive personality kicks in and I can’t seem to put it down. While I managed to beat Lou and moved onto medium on Wii this weekend, I’m still plodding along in COD4.
While you FPS pros conquer COD4 in a couple hours, it’s taking me much, much longer. As a matter of fact, I thought I was reaching the end of the game last night when I found Al-Asad and watched him get shot (!), only to morph into Price in his pre-Captain years in the next sequence. So I decided it was time to check out the IGN Game Guide and realized I’m only a third of the way through the game! Now here I am maneuvering through Chernobyl radiation in my woolly mammoth suit, getting mutilated by dogs at every corner. Awesome!
Impressions on Crysis vs. Call of Duty 4:
- You have to be a much better shot at COD4. None of this going invisible and picking off the enemy one-by-one. I’ve become a far better player in the last couple of weeks, strafing and shooting in one fluid motion.
- Realism and intensity in COD4 far surpass Crysis. Man, I feel like I’m in a war zone, and having grown up in the Middle East, the scenery is dead-on. From an adrenaline standpoint, COD gets my blood-pumping.
- Crysis’s artistry is a winner. While I was unexpectedly surprised by the detailed maps, characters, and environments in COD4, I still keep thinking back to Crysis’s Core. That was some trippy, cool stuff.
- I prefer the do-it-alone attitude of Crysis – made me feel like I accomplished something Rambo-style when I’d finished the game, i.e., I wasn’t relying on my team mates to do all my dirty work.
- When it comes to overall performance, COD4 wins hands down.
- I ran Crysis at a scaled down @ 12 X 10 at 2X AA, and FPS averaged b/w 25 – 45. Until I started playing COD, I didn’t even realize there were frame-dropping hiccups till I played COD and saw its smooth beauty.
- COD4 is cranked up on my machine – 16 X 10 (highest for my 22” flat panel), 4X AA, all options turned on (including multi-card config, which I couldn’t find in Crysis.) FPS averages around 120 and as high as 150. Gameplay is like a knife through butter.
- My online experience in Crysis was better, and this is for one simple reason…I can’t get onto a server in COD4. The first thing I did when I clicked on Multi-Player COD4 was download the latest patch, but as soon as I tried to join server I got a Punkbuster Initialization error. I downloaded Punkbuster version 1.64 (the latest), but I now can’t get onto a single game server as every one of them as they’re all 1.4, and incompatible with my version of PB. I have no idea how to revert back to an older version, and frankly, I have no time to read the FAQs – I just want it to work. Hints anyone?
In all though, I'm loving both games, but for very different reasons. They're both a big step up from my days of mastering Galaga in the arcade!

hi, i installed pb and choosed cod4 in add game. but when i try to connect to a server it just told me "the cd key is in use, try to connect later"
what's wrong?
(my COD4 is downloaded)

I run the [KiK] server and I'm wondering if there is anyway to fight the MXS hacks? Punkbuster isn't picking up the hacks and I know they hacking. What good is punk buster anyway? Does it do anything besides crash and lag my game? If anyone knows how to block the MSX hacks please let me know. They already got their site taken down by activision but now they are back. The site is http://www.msxsecurity.com/

Still can't get online. Have uninstalled Punkbuster, reinstalled Punkbuster, and still get a server error any time I try to log on. Says that my server version doesn't match.

Steffee, go here http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php
Download the PBSetup. Run it, point it to the COD install folder. It will automatically update COD4 to the latest Punk Buster version. Should work fine for you.
See ya on the battlefield : D
And if you see Nukem=VX9= in pub server, don't forget to say hi.
Peace

If you have any performance issues, or overclocking questions. Ask on the SLi forums page. I got great SLI advice from person named Righthook. They have guides out there too. Especially for new games like COD4.
Luck to you

Steffee,
When do we see your face?

Always download the patches manually. You'll need 1.4 & the 1.4-1.5 incremental patches. After you patch, backup your user profile (save your progress). The latest PB for COD4 is v2.061 (client not server). Uninstall previous version first. I've had few issues with PB and downloading the latest client always solved it for me.

Before you start to overclock, read as much as you can before starting, there are a lot of overclocking web sites out there and you shouldn't have any issues. If you like online FPS then i would suggest getting BF2142. I get the latest games when they come out, and i find BF2142 is still one of the best out there. i have even taken a day or two off work just to play it. (OK more than two, but lets not tell anyone).

Uninstall Punkbuster and use the one with COD4. Works fine for me. See you online.
