We need your help choosing a codename for our upcoming CUDA on ARM development kit.

Recently announced at the SuperComputing 2011 conference in Seattle, Wash., the CUDA on ARM development kit will enable programmers to easily write code for the next generation of powerful, energy efficient supercomputers. Fitting, as this same hardware – powered by the ARM-based NVIDIA Tegra 3 mobile processor and a discrete NVIDIA CUDA GPU – is being used in the Barcelona Supercomputing Center’s world’s first ARM-based supercomputer.

This NVIDIA CUDA on ARM development kit.

But, we need a name for the new kit. The name should reflect  the importance of this product in the future of energy-efficient supercomputing.  While CUDA GPUs have helped researchers discover breakthroughs in science and technology, CUDA GPUs with ARM processors will help scientists achieve even greater breakthroughs using supercomputers with sustainable power consumption. The kit may very well turn out to be the stepping stone to exascale architecture. As such, the name needs to be interesting, descriptive and memorable.

So the question is, will you help? What codename would you choose to call this gigaflop-packing, energy-lite development kit? Would it be something fuzzy, delicious or simply green?

If we use your suggestion, we’ll make it worth your while.  You’ll be one of the first to receive one of the development kits, free of charge. Plus, you’ll score some serious bragging rights. If we don’t end up using a reader-submitted codename, we will pick a winner at random.

To participate, simply:

  1. Leave a comment on this blog with your suggestion for a name. Be sure to let us know why you think it’s the perfect name for our new CUDA on ARM Development Kit.
  2. Email us at cuda@nvidia.com with your email address and the codename you submitted (for tracking purposes).

We’ll be accepting your suggestions until 11:59AM on December 9th  2011. The winner will be announced either late December or early January.

So, think hard. But think fast. We can’t wait to see all your great ideas.

Good luck!

Click here for full contest rules and details.

Don’t forget, you can vote for your favorite codenames below by clicking “like” in the comment.

Tegra chips are code-named after superheroes. To combine them and discrete GPUs, code name it Janus, which is both a Marvel superhero character and also the Roman god of beginnings and transitions. Janus is usually depicted with two faces, in this case, one is looking towards the energy efficient CPU cores on the ARM side and the other towards the compute horsepower of the GPU, combining in a transition to a new era of energy-efficient supercomputing. Janus is also
linked to auspices of the future.

Kenneth, totally agree. Unfortunately contest regulations make it hard for us to open up to all global regions. However it would pretty awesome to see an NVIDIA kit with your suggested name if it got chosen. So folks dont be shy to spell out a few good names.

A superhero character from the ‘Legion of Super-heroes’. His abilities include being able to reflect any object back to it’s source. Since the Tegra Chips are code-named after superheros. And this kit will allow users to easily program this chip and it being using in ARM based supercomputer, any name unrelated to super heroism would not suffice.

And yes! Reflecto is the perfect name for the Tegra + Cuda development kit.

I am choosing STEM due to multiple reasons:

    1) STEM reminds us of plant stems, that sustain the leaves and flowers of a plant during its growth. Analogously, the devkit will sustain the development and optimization of an application to exascale. The greenness of plants also relates to the environment awareness and energy efficiency characteristics inherent to the devkit.

    2) STEM also reminds us of stem cells, which are newborn, unspecialized cells that can convert into any cell in the body. Likewise, NVIDIA’s devkit can be specialized and used to tackle a variety of different problems posed by academics and the industry. Furthermore, stem cells can self-renew, which may relate to the vitality and longevity of ARM-based supercomputers.

    3) STEM can be a backronym to Supercomputing on Tegra-based Energy-aware Machines, or Scalable Tegra Environment for Modelling.

    4) STEM is a small, simple, easy-to-remind word. Moreover, it has only 4 uppercase letters, just like CUDA.

I’ve always liked that the NVIDIA code names for Tegra are based on classic superheroes. And since CUDA on arm is all about Tegra 3(
) going to work, I think ‘Kent’ would be very apropos.
    Then for Tegra 4 ( Wayne ) there’s ‘Malone’. For Tegra 5 ( Grey ) there’s ‘Dayspring’.
    Tegra 6 ( Logan ) there’s ‘Howlett’.
Tegra 7 ( Stark ) there’s ‘Potts’. You could also with the theme of a marriage of Tegra and Cuda, which would give you the code names of ‘Lane’, ‘Kent’, ‘Summers’, ‘Akihiro’ and… umm… well… you could just pick your favorite of Stark’s many girlfriends. 🙂

An ARMed CUDA seems a nice match from two of the strongest trends:
    * Parallel Computing
    * Green Computing

It’s unfortunate that CUDA, standing for “Compute Unified Device Architecture”, has little or no connection to neither of those principle, but it has a strong marketing appeal and you can’t just throw it away for something else.
So, if I had to choose a name I’ll go for something like CUDA-GP, where GP stands for Green Power.

Well, I would like to suggest something Latin. As we already know that the combination of Tegra ARM CPUs and CUDA GPUs is planned to deliver a high energy efficiency. The Latin word for energy is: “navitas”, while word for efficient is: “efficiens”. Therefore, my suggestion will be to combine those two words and produce another word, something like: “Naviciens” or “Effinavitas”, or something other that you will like. But my pick is for “Naviciens”.

Hello,Let me introduce myself : Guillaume FORTAINE, Cloudpreneur :http://www.linkedin.com/in/gfortaineI have read with interest this blog post and, from my point of view,  there are very interesting suggestions.Especially, the ones from stuntprogrammer and The Smile Man are very subtle and thoughtful with their references to mythology (Janus and Promotheus). By the way, the one from Will Ramey is also interesting by symbolizing the breakthrough from a such architecture (Cornerstone). Moreover, I would greatly appreciate to invite you to a further reading of the article entitled “Nvidia aims to knock Intel out of supercomputers with ARM CPUs and graphics chips” [1]To illustrate this battle at the top for the leadership, by combining the previous great ideas and to stay in accordance with Nvidia Tegra codenames style [2], I would suggest Armageddon [3][4]. Graphene relates to nanotechnology, matrix connectivity, intelligent materials, honeycomb perfection.
Graphene is a single-layer of molecular carbon strongly organized in a perfect honeycomb structure.
It is made of very simple carbon atoms, yet it is one of the strongest materials, 200 times as strong as steel.

GRAPHENE evokes the matrix connection of a supercomputing structure, and also evokes the strength of processing achievable from very simple nodes, utilizing very small energy.

GRAPHENE also evokes the graphical nature of graphite, one of the most successful drawing tools known to mankind, a driver of creativity.

GRAPHENE can also be written GRAPH-N, relating to the number of nodes that form a graphics rendering fabric.

Call it “Master Blaster” because it’s a low-power brain (the ARM CPU) riding a mean piece of brawn (the GPU) and driving the creation of a new economy where power is scarce (like the world of Mad Max).  Who run Bartertown?  Master Blaster run Bartertown!  (Or at least Barcelona.)  Then call the follow-on product Thunderdome – two chips enter, one chip leaves.

I wonder if there is a good term that denotes a new beginning.    or basis of a new architecture.

A new beginning of a heterogeneous server architecture that will pair two energy efficient processors:
    – a ARM CPU optimized to run scalar parts of an application
    – a CUDA GPU optimized for parallelism
Or to say it another way:The soul of the ARM CPU is energy efficiency: performance / watt for scalar appsThe soul of the CUDA GPU is parallel processor: performance / watt for data- & compute-intensive apps.Lots of concepts – hard to merge into a cool codename that we can use.

a codename for the CUDA on ARM development kit ? ARMON
Definitely. Standing for ‘ARM on’. And much more.
Interestingly, ARMON is also a word displaying an indo-european root. ARMON stands in medieval and modern Europe as the essential part of the towbar on carts, coaches and carriages.
At first commonly used over Northern Europe (XIVth century), ARMON eventually spreaded to Mediterranean shores, also designating drawbar on a plough.
Purposefully designed to help mankind thriving along centuries – both on speed & efficiency – ARMON stands once again as an unique & essential tool, on the threshold of the next green silicium Era.

    Another one?
let’s propose a quite simple one, ARMONIA
Obvious, indeed: getting harmonious & smooth functioning is the essential aim of such tools…

In the field one of the great weaknesses of the name CUDA is that people, especially business types, do not know what it is.  Even describing it as CUDA architecture is somewhat obtuse and obscure for most.

Therefore, whatever the new name, please, please, please make it an adjective.  For example, ‘C++ programming language.’  C++ is the adjective.  Heck, think about leveraging the existing brand:  ‘CUDA++ programming language’ for example.

    Codename: Mallard

My Reasoning: CUDA spelled backwards is ADUC, and a Mallard
is a duck, but not just any duck. It’s the most common duck in the northern
hemisphere. It’s also the ancestor of most domestic ducks.

A male Mallard has a green head. That color helps it both blend in and stand
out in its surroundings. There’s also something special about the color green.
It signifies a cleaner world; one in which energy efficiency is crucial for

The Mallard doesn’t have ARMS in the traditional sense, but
it does have strong wings. It flaps those wings a multitude of times in order
to travel quickly. A variant of a flap is a flop, and when you put enough flops
together, you get a gigaflop. Gigaflops of processing power are capable of
taking a supercomputer to infinity and beyond.

Lastly, the Mallard has webbed feet. It uses those webbed
feet to move itself quickly and easily through the water. A supercomputer has
its own version of webbed feet. It uses the World-Wide Web in order to quickly and
easily move its data throughout the planet.

Bonus Points: A Mallard is so dang handsome, how could you
resist using it in a marketing campaign? 😉

“Piranha”. Each arm cpu is like a piranha. They are not much powerful alone. But if they join together and make a team (like a powerful multi core supercomputer with arm cpus), they can beat anything(i.e a supercomputer with much powerful cpus). Their smallness resembles energy efficiency and cuda gpus is their sight as a scary and ferocious predator.

    NVIDIA SeeSonic.

NVIDIA is one of the (well, sometimes it’s only one leading) leaders on visual computing field.

Integrating CUDA and ARM would be a great challenge, both for NVIDIA engineers and mobile programmers all around the world. Thus, this challenge should be named in a way that could fascinate all people who are interested in this field, with the strong implications that NVIDIA has made with its various codenames.

My suggestion SeeSonic is the combination of two words-See(Verb), and Supersonic.

By “seeing”  “supersonic computing speed” powered by CUDA, both mobile programmers and handheld device users would be fascinated with the graphical performance of the product.

    How about “Embedded Supercomputing Kit”?

When I was finishing up grad school in 2003, I was trying to quickly prototype robots with computer vision using off-the-shelf webcams and either small-form-factor PC components or affordable embedded dev kits.  At the time, the perf of embedded DSP dev kits was awful and there was no driver support for any decent cameras.  Looking for more computationally powerful solutions, I found mini-ITX boards that ran on x86 CPUs and required fancy DC-DC power supply hackery to get them running stably off RC car batteries.  The smallest usable setup I came up with was VIA Nano board with a pricy DC-DC power supply board that could directly use two RC car batteries in series, and Logitech QuickCam.  Since it was a full-fledged PC, it was easy to run Linux on it and use available QuickCam drivers.  The performance was enough to do low resolution 30 fps vision.

During all that time, I knew I was only a few years away from seeing something much better…  something that could run Linux flawlessly but didn’t need to be x86, something with good connectivity, good development tools, and good industry adoption.  And best of all, something that could do math at mind-blowing speeds with a DSP that only needed to be powered on when necessary, and actually run off battery.  So, taking two mutually exclusive target audiences (low-power embedded and maximum-performance) and somehow doing both.  This little monster is probably the first thing I’ve seen that could legitimately call itself an embedded supercomputer.

How awesome would it be to have a stereo pair of frame-synced cameras and one of these kits strapped onto an RC car (or, dare I say, helicopter)?

The first part of the word – ragna – basically means gods, or ruling powers.
The second part – rok –  has several meanings, such as development, origin, cause, relation, fate, and end.

It kind of fits the situation.  It will be the new “ruling power” enabling programmers to write the code.
It will be used in the “development” and will be the “origin” of the next generation of supercomputers.

The word Ragnarok as a whole comes from Norse mythology.  It is the name of a series of events that ultimately led to the demise of the majority of the worlds current gods.  The world was submerged in water, and when it resurfaced, the surviving and reborn gods gathered, and the world was repopulated by two human survivors.

The events of Ragnarok led to a fresh start for the world.

“The kit may very well turn out to be the stepping stone to exascale architecture.”

In my mind, this fits perfectly.

    Suggestion :  ENNEAD
Explanation:-Ennead refers to the group of nine  Egyptian deities which include -ATUM or TEM (God of completeness, perfection and beginning -name can be used for next processor in series signifying beginning)                                                                                                   -SHU (God of air; hence personifies coolness and calmness – a feature of Nvidia processors which are energy efficient and silent)                                                                                                   -ISIS ( God of nature and magic – Because Nvidia processors are magical as well as focusing on green technology)
    – The use of ENNEAD hence signifies power, beginning, nature and mystery ; all rolled into one-  which in a way also are analogous to the Nvidia processor  combining ARM and CUDA.
    – The word ENNEAD also begins with the pronunciation (en) which is same as that of Nvidia.
     – The Nvidia processors are the best in market and have a “God” status which makes it more viable option.

    Efficiency High-performance computing kit.

You can’t get around the perfect name that just boost your adrenaline level when you pronounce it “Nvidia” you can almost hear and remember the first time you hear the  mysterious lady whispering it when you start up your game “NnnnVida” perfect fit , can’t go without it. Now the efficiency is just THAT word that everyone loves these days, it has to be green, good for the environment, Nvidias logo color only support this factor. H and P combined for high performance, you know Nvidia as a brand of quality, and it fits good with the C for computting as it spells out PC, aka personal computer. Add the kit behind for a clean finish. You are not in doubt as soon as you read it, Nvidia EH-PC kit, as soon as you see it, you can see 2 things. First PC -> computer kit-> some sort of either development tool or a kit with alot of stuff in it. You get very curious, what is this? it will stand out in the crowd, you wanna hear more about it. Thats my example of a perfect name to this project.

    1. Arcuda2. Hercules – Roman god of power and strength. :)3. Nerio – Roman goddesses of war and personification of valor4. Peregrine. After, the bird, Falcon. So far, no bird known can match the flying speed of aperegrine falcon in its hunting dive. The peregrine falcon is thefastest bird – and in fact the fastest animal on Earth – when in adive. As it executes this dive, the peregrine falcon soars to a greatheight, then dives steeply at speeds of over 300 kilometers (200miles) per hour. Since it is a speed in hunting and dive, I kind ofassociate it with gaming/competition/adventure as well…5. Cheetah – Power+Speed… 6. Dhanush – A sanskrit word for bow – symbolic of swiftness and power
    7. Boomerang8. Torpedo – a cigar shaped, self propelled underwater projectilelaunched from a submarine9. Arjun – ambidextrous master archer in Indian mythology – may not bethat recognizable but well…. Swift, focused.

    I’m going to suggest Echinda.
Echinda was a greek mythological god.
(Greek: Ἔχιδνα, ekhis, ἔχις, meaning “she viper”)

She was known to be the mother of all monsters, as most of the greek mythological monsters were mothered by her. She was half woman, half snake. In your idea sense she’s half built for the people, and half built for power.

As read in  Hesiod, Theogony 295-305  “[…] the goddess fierce Echidna who is half a nymph with glancing eyes and fair cheeks, and half again a huge snake, great and awful, with speckled skin, eating raw flesh beneath the secret parts of the holy earth. And there she has a cave deep down under a hollow rock far from the deathless gods and mortal men. There, then, did the gods appoint her a glorious house to dwell in: and she keeps guard in Arima beneath the earth, grim Echidna, a nymph who dies not nor grows old all her days”

This can be inspiring as to how the new Echinda named CUDA on ARM development kit is such powerful new technology that will not become outdated or break. It encompasses almost every point I can think of. I hope you consider this, and good luck with your new line!

    I sugguest: Abarimon

From wikipedia: Abarimon is the name of a legendary race with backwards feet, but in spite of this handicap were able to run at great speed.

Quite similar to CUDA on ARM – Something that runs at great speed even when very much constrained by energy consumption limitations.

    NOVA Development platform

Nvidia’s Overt New Approach development platform
Nova is the Latin word for New which is what this brings to the table, a plethora of new options and opportunities for development
plus who are we kidding, giving Latin names to things is just cool ^_^

NVIDIA chobhamChobham is famous as British composite armor. The integration of ARM and GPU makes the product tough and hardcore.

I’ve got another idea here, for a complete line of products:

The line could be ARMADA, which is kind of obvious, and each product could be one of the time periods of the card game “Magic”, as Valiant comics used to edit comics based on this game with his division Armada.
So products could be “Urza”, “Otaria”, “Ravnica”, “Alara” , etc.

I don’t have time to go through all these posts.  I’m at work.  And I work for Nvidia.  Somebody tell me if this has been suggested.

    Cuda Fractal.

    Fractal suggests cutting-edge “cool” science.

Fractals connote breaking big things to smaller and smaller identical pieces as well as building large, rich structures from simple starting points.

…which very appropriate to the mobile devices that popularized the ARM chip and Nvidia’s involvement with it.

BareAcuda 1. Its a bare boned energy efficient supercomputer
    2. Baracuda will rip any problem it has into shreds and destroy it
    3. A silhouette of the baracudas teeth can be its logo

B´ak´tun, in maya language is a period of time in the mesoamerican calendar that was used to represent the beguining/end on a new/old era.
As we may know now, the 13th Baktun started on August 11, 3114 B.C. and will end on Dec 21st 2012.
That date represent a new beginning for the human kind,  a hope for a better understanding on how to co-exist with our planet and nature, how to respect it and growth, to learn from our errors and built a better future.  Nothing to see with the end of the world!, well, yes, the end of an era that needs to improve.
For me that is the meaning of this important technology, a new way to use supercomputing, in a greener environment, more intelligent, dedicated to improve human life.

    Gpu Arm Integrated Architecture
The name Gaia from Greek Mythology. She arose after CHAOS to become the everlasting foundation (i.e. mother) of the gods of Olympus. This implies the foundation that this new architecture will bring to a new generation of supercomputing technology.
The name Gaia is also derived from the greek for land or earth, and she is the mother earth,  giving a connection to the kit’s green credentials.

    The Roman equivalent of GAIA

    Joint Architecture Development Environment.
The name Jade implying something green, a precious object, a thing of beauty.

    Gpu Embedded arM INItiative
The name Gemini, implying the twinning of two architectures.

Like supermassive Stars  are composed of thousands of billions of small particles of matter, a large number of small cores can be used to build high density computing systems with low energy consumption.
COMACAA (“Cuda fOr superMAssive Computing on Arm Architecture”) may suggest the importance of the ARM Architecture. Nvidia Tegra is a valid choice for HPC.

Since NVIDIA likes to name its products after inventors, call it the “Reese Kit”.
In 1928, H.B. Reese invented a candy that was the first to bring together together chocolate + Peanut Butter, 2 ingredients that were great on their own but even better together, much like a CUDA GPU + Tegra ARM CPU.

Tachyons are hypothetical subatomic particles that are incapable of moving slower than the speed of light. Seems appropriate for something this fast and efficient.
