Today, NVIDIA released its final set of Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL)-certified GeForce drivers in preparation for the launch of Windows 8 later this month. Download the new GeForce 306.97 drivers for Windows 8 from GeForce.com.

Polished drivers are critical to the success of any new operating system. Getting them out ahead of Microsoft’s upcoming Windows release is part of our effort to insure the PC remains the premier gaming and productivity platform.

The PC is the home of constant innovation. The combination of Microsoft’s new Windows 8 operating system with our new line of GeForce products, powered by the award-winning Kepler architecture, is going to provide PC users with an exceptional new lineup of extremely fast and fluid PCs.

This driver marks the third set of WHQL-certified drivers posted on GeForce.com in advance of the launch of Windows 8.

The drivers have already received acclaim for their stability:

I have to commend NVIDIA for releasing a perfect-working, rock stable Windows 8 driver

For more details on the new GeForce 306.97 drivers, refer to the release highlights on the driver download pages and read the GeForce R304 article on GeForce.com.

Just a small problem. I’m not sure of
the source… But on Windows 8 the Toshiba Qosmio X870 series Notebooks lose
    their LightBoost capability.

It simply does not activate when
entering 3D mode. It worked fine on Windows 7. Could be a toshiba
problem though. Sadly I cant find any links, emails (or an active forum) to report problems on.

I couldn’t find a specific blogspot for this so I came here, justa little bug I found. When I update my geoforce 7600’s in an older rig,I have to get updates for win XP(and x64)and win7.On both XP installs, after the update,I have to reinitialize the sli config. However,I get a dialogue stating that program manager MUST be stopped before you can. So,I invoke task manager, kill exploere.exe,THEN restart explorer, and the glitch is gone.I was a bit startled at first, but >30 years experience in A+ found the answer on the first try.

We were not able to reproduce this problem.  Can you please provide further details?  Do you have the display mode set correctly so that 3D can be enabled?  Did you let all of the driver components to update?  Have you tested using the built in 3D test or was this in a game or website?

  • http://Geforce.com/ Manuel Guzman

This will be the last driver to support the Geforce 7 series GPU so unfortunately no further fixes are planned for Geforce 7 and older GPUs.

    Hi Manuel
I have checked everything I could find on-line regarding the problem but I still cant get this working. It does however seem possible that the problem is related to a bios update released by Toshiba (ver1.50-win) and installed by myself just prior to the Windows 8 installation. However after posting on the Toshiba forum and trying to get Technical support to look at it to no avail, I have pretty much given up on solving this. As for display mode settings… 3D does work perfectly, the Laptop simply does not enable the “high brightness” that it did in Windows 7. I have been testing using the built-in Nvidia 3D vision tests as well as World of Warcraft. Both applications enable 3D and the screen dims instead of going brighter, and to make matters worse I cant adjust the brightness up or down while in 3D mode, thus I cant use it at the moment.

This driver crashes on me constantly.

I’ve been using the RTM version of Windows 8 on my computer since it was first released on MSDN about 2 months ago, but haven’t had an issue until recently (with this driver).

    Windows 8 RTM 64bit
    Asus Sabertooth 990FX
    AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.21Ghz
    Palit Geforce 460 SLI (x2)
    12 GB Ram
    Monitors: AOC e2343Fk (x2)

ITR: Open a website with flash (hulu.com) or start a game (skyrim). Monitor 2 shows heavy sparkles. GFX application freezes. Green boxes appear across both screens. Screens turn black. Upon recovery a notification appears saying that the 306.97 driver has crashed and recovered. Screen turns black again and notification appears again (2 or three times more). close the application with task manager and screen recovers and sparkles vanish.

I realize my setup is a little odd, using AMD + SLI, but it is a valid configuration that has worked for several months. I hope you will pass this along to your validation team so that I get back to playing games on my computer. My non-gaming computers are using 302.82 and low-end cards with no issue on hulu or other flash websites.

The mobile driver crashes while playing World of Warcraft on Windows 8 Pro Release. Black screen, returns to desktop, while WoW is still running in the background, can’t click on anything on desktop and the cursor remains as the WoW cursor, but can interact with the desktop using the keyboard and also click on the taskbar. But can’t end WoW through Task Manager because it cannot be interacted with using the mouse. After 1 or 2 minutes, the WoW closes itself and everything returns to normal.
    My specs are:
    Asus F50Sv 253 laptop with;
    Core2Duo T9550 2.66 GHz
Geforce 120M GT (tried with both the release 306.97 and beta 310.33)
    4 GB DDR2 800 MHz RAM
    320 GB 5400 RPM HDD

Will try with a different game and report back the results.

My HP TouchSmart with the GeForce 9600M GS also crashed from time to time. I had to use an older version (302.82) and disable automatic update to prevent the problem.

The resolution of my screen does not fit well since I installed Windows 8. Isn’t there any possibility to update drivers for theses older series?

  • David Medlock

Using this driver Win 7 has an experience index (graphics) of >4 with a geforce 9500gs.  With Win 8 the performance drops to 2.  This disables my ceton tuner because the graphics card is “too slow” for HD content.  I can’t find any mention of NVidia graphics performance being halved by windows 8.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Joeycheater Joey Williams

EXACTLY the same issue with Natural selection 2 crashing, can’t access the task manager as it won’t let me click it through a black desktop screen(only the taskbar displays which works as normal and will let me open programs, just can’t bring any of them to the foreground). Seems to be an issue with displaying the desktop and keeping it in the foreground.

I’m blaming Windows 8 although it MIGHT still be a driver issue there is no sign of the driver actually crashing. I can alt tab out as soon as the game itself crashes and the taskbar displays straight away. Unlike a driver crash in Win7 were the entire screen goes blank and nothing can display until the driver restarts.

    My specs are;
    Asrock Extreme 4 gen3
    Intel 520gb SSD + 4x2tb HDD’s
    Gtx 670 SLI
    4x4gb DDR3 G.skill ripjawsX

Stability tested /w IBT/Prime95 & plenty of other games that don’t crash.

The same Natural Selection 2 crash under windows 7 is handled normally by the OS and I can access the task manager properly and end the game process.

Nvidia is NOT ready for Windows 8!!. I have a GTX 470 and Windows 8 Pro boots up to a black screen every time no matter what Nvidia driver I use. At the moment I am having to use a spare ATI HD 4650 which works perfectly with Windows 8 Pro.

I am so sick of Nvidia display driver problems I am going to buy Apple products the rest of my life.  Windows blames Nvidia…Nvidia blames Windows…and the users just sit and wish they had never heard of either after spending HOURS trying to fix a problem that has no solution.  I am getting an MacBook for Christmas and am going to take a sledgehammer to my laptop.

Hello folks, the times I’ve been looking for this solution because I am having the same problem. And this is causing a problem in my Guild wars 2. Use GTX580.

  • Steven Markham

I’m having the same issue on my machine. This machine played flawlessly under Win 7 as is. After my upgrade to Win 8, clean install, I have the same issue that you both describe. Mine will play for a while, but then crashes. I get a message that the NVIDIA driver stop functioning. Started with the older version of the driver and worked my way thru them all.
Mine is running a GT240. Seems there are 2 common threads. Windows 8 and the NVIDIA drivers.
    Specs are:
    HP Pavilion Elite m9340f
    Intel Core2 Quad Q6700  2.66 x64
    6.00 GB RAM
    750 GB Hitachi HDD
    GeForce GT240

I’ve searched a lot and this is the first I’ve seen of the exact problem I’m experiencing. And this has been happening for about 3 weeks.

My Windows 8 PC just got the 10/26/2012 driver update from Nvidia, and it caused Windows to fail loading after rebooting.  I had to restore the PC using the new Windows 8 recovery options.  I previously had Windows Update set to automatically install updates, but am now changing it to review updates before installing, all thanks to crappy Nvidia drivers.

  • Cptsquirt

My GT520 will not work with Windows 8.  Works fine with 7 and XP, but Windows 8 loads with a distorted screen.  Tried many different driver versions – regular and betas.   I see many many other people experience similar troubles with NVIDIA products and Windows 8

  • darkcg

I suspect buyng obsolete hardware for an high price is not the solution. BTW, I use nVidia products since the Geforce 3 TI-500 and driver problems happens with EVERY PRODUCT. Including Apple. If you’re a gamer, I don’t see how an Apple product can please you.

  • Hansjörg Reister

OK. It is not all bad. But also not all good as well. In principal the drivers seem to work. But i’ve seen a couple of crashes on a 650 Ti when doing certain image processing task in Windows Live photo gallery.

  • http://c.cureshotverahip.com/ HomelessAvatar

So after trying it in Directx 9 mode I haven’t had any more of this issue. But I think it was a problem with WoW, because I didn’t have any issues playing GW2, SWTOR or Diablo 3. But with the latest beta driver, this issue seems to have been solved. I haven’t had any issues since.

I tried to install the old driver but i get a black falshing screren that made me reinstal windows again. I check the compability of the new driver and is listed the nforce 430/geforce 6150SE, but not the nforce 430/ ge force 6100. My product is not supported then?

Im having a major problem after installing graphics drivers. The more PC settings
is unreadable thus making it a hit and miss affair trying to adjust settings.
    Anyone else have this problem??

  • Ian Clough

I am truly surprised at how many problems people are having with Windows 8.
I am also having a problem after updating my graphics drivers.
Luckily my PC isnt crashing and so far functions fairly ok.
Sadly after driver updates the more PC settings UI is unreadable.
This is a major pain . No amount of adjusting in visual settings in the OS or Nvidia
control panel seems to fix this.  If I uninstall the drivers and remove the graphics card then I can read it. I think it is about time that we as consumers were given
better value for dollar from all I.T companies.
Software and hardware developers really need to get there acts together.
Especially when it comes to the Windows 8 O.S.  But  in all fairness to Nvidia I think they got handed the smelly end of the stick this time.
We are the customers so we choose what we want in an OS when we have to pay for it and should be provided with options not ultimatums from OS devs . Full stop.

I too have issues with W8 that I believe are due to the GeForce 6100 driver. Rolling back to the standard windows one seems to be more stable but still freezes occasionally, the latest 306.97 one doesn’t seem to stable at all with my system.

I just upgraded to Windows 8 as well, and after installing the new 310.70 WHQL driver to a GT520 Geforce. I get flickering black screens only when starting the comp. I am not the tech savviest, but it seems that
    1. I have got to uninstall the driver. I just have no idea what the file is called in the System32drivers folder if that is where the file is? Can anyone help?
    2. Plan is then to restart the computer and then reinstall the driver. Seems that some have had success that way
If ANY have other suggestions, I will greatly appreciate all inputs

Had to Hard Reset my computer to get rid of it. What’s the deal here? Any clue?

Windows 8 pro shuts down every time Nvidia post a new driver update. With no warning windows 8 tells me my computer has a problem and needs to shut down with an IRQL error. After I update then no more problems until they post a new driver update. This has happened 3 times and never fails. I just realized as I am writing this that I need to stop windows 8 from checking for updates until this problem is fixed or go back to windows 7. GTX 470, core i7 920. 24 gigs ram, msi eclipse.

tested drivers from 306.97 to 310.90 all crash in following setup–asrock extreme 11, 2 680s in slots 1&3 with areca 1882 in slot 5 or 6; 2 680s in slots 1&5 (asrock manual) areca 1882 in slot 3. if the raid card is doing a rebuild the nvidia driver crashes repeatedly until it causes a hard drive to be dropped from the array being rebuilt, losing the rebuild and making a hard reset neccessary. What is the fault here, a bad bios (problems from at least 1.70-2.20), bad drivers from nvidia, or poor firmware from areca? the last is unlikely areca does alot of testing since their world is data—maybe nvidia should think about building an ‘enterprise’ driver that is reliable and then a gaming driver for anything where crashing and damage to a system isn’t important—i can’t run a workstation this way, where’s fault and where’s the fix for this problem? tried gen 2 and gen3 settings on motherboard, no difference, have experienced the problem in win7-64,win8-64, win2012 essential, win 2012 server; whlq there is no such thing and all these drivers might as well be alpha or beta Attachments

Had similar problems using NVIDIA GeForce 7600, display goes blank and flashes with Windows 8 and 306.97 driver.  Had to remove the card, uninstall the driver, shutdown, re-insert card, and start back up.  It works with the default Windows 8 driver, but Windows 8 kept reinstalling 306.97 driver automatically so I had to remove card, and go through the whole process several times.  Now I tried disabling automatic driver updates.  Did this by right clicking on “Computer”, select Properties->Advanced System Settings->Hardware->Device Installation Settings and selected “No, let me choose what to do” and uncheck “Automatically get the device app … by your device manufacturer”.  Hopefully this will stop Windows for automatically loading the NVIDIA drivers and allow me to use my video card.  Frustrating….

I have a Dell XPS 15Z with windows 7 and a Nvidia GeForce GT 525M graphics card and ive been experiencing the black screen at startup straight after logging in which takes around 3-5 mins to clear to my desktop. This has been happening for some months and i havent really been able to find a solution. I tried looking at Event Viewer (i think its called) to see what was failing at startup and it seemed that something to do with the graphics card is the problem. I also read that i could use System Restore to go back to a point where this problem wasnt occuring but i think i was too late. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this? Any help would be great! Thanks in advance!

hello:  windows 8 has been a nightmare for me. i got a new laptop w/a much better GPU (an AMD Radeon) but, when i installed Photoshop, Illustrator etc. i got really bad Flickering, canvas fills with black, can’t use the 3D tools etc etc.

so, this will be my 2nd time sending the same machine back to Toshiba (long story) and i plan to replace it w/a Dell that has a NVIDIA Geforce which i had hopes would be much better. but after reading these post i don’t think i’ll have any better luck.

what is going on here? 8 has been out for what? over a year? and still these problems? it’s CRAZY!

has anyone got or know of a GPU that is working with Windows 8? please, i really need to find one as i am trying to build a business. thank you!! email me: kararowe@yahoo.com

I’m not entirely sure if people have gotten an answer to this yet–because I haven’t seen one from any NVIDIA official on this thread at all. I have a GT520 card, but I recently bought a GTX 650ti which I tried and had the black screen issue. After upgrading to Windows 8.1 Pro, had the black screen issue right after the logo again as well–with my GT520. What I then had to do was boot into safe mode (I just restarted my computer multiple times as Windows was booting up, and mashed F8 each time until it went into automatic repair mode) and then rebooted into Safe Mode under Advanced Options, and Startup Settings. In Safe Mode I uninstalled my NVIDIA Driver, which, at this time is the 331.58. I only uninstalled that one. I left everything else alone. I restarted when I was prompted to by the NVIDIA panel to complete the uninstall.

I booted back into Windows normally, and then let the uninstall finish its thing. I double-checked to make sure the NVIDIA control panel was gone, and it was. Then I RESTARTED once more–to let the driver that Windows automatically installs for you (which is one of the DUMBEST things Microsoft has done) replace it and finish installing itself. Then to be on the safe side, I restarted again. When all of that was done–I went onto the NVIDIA website, downloaded the 331.58 driver, installed it, and rebooted. Everything is working fine now.

The problem that is happening, is as you installed Windows 8, or 8.1, it automatically installs drivers for your computer’s hardware to make it meet the requirements for Windows 8, or 8.1. In this case, it installs an NVIDIA 304 driver. Normally, after a driver is installed, you are prompted to restart. Not in this case. What you have to do RIGHT AFTER you reach the desktop mode for Windows 8/8.1, is restart. Immediately. Don’t do anything. Just restart one more time. Let that driver finish installing. If you don’t, if you go to the NVIDIA website and install their newest driver, what it then does on restart is have TWO DRIVERS attempting to finish installing themselves at the SAME TIME. This creates a huge conflict and thus–the black/flickering grey screen right after the logo.

I’m going to replace my GT520 with the GTX650ti I bought now that the drivers seem to be stabilized, and see if it works. Hope this works for you guys.

Hello Emily, thank you for that concise and clear post.
After the problems that I had, which resulted in the PC doing exactly as you said with two sets of drivers trying to install at the same time, I went back to Windows 7, and have stayed there ever since.

I bought Windows 8 through the student store on my college campus. Unfortunately because I waited too long to upgrade from XP, it was when Windows 8 was out, so they stopped selling 7 for a reduced cost through the school’s website. I’m thinking of just dropping the money on 7 though… and waiting for Microsoft to finally figure everything out with 8.

From what I know, Windows isn’t planning on doing anymore driver updates after the initial install of the OS. That’s all up to the graphics card companies.

Thank you for the reply :).
I have a GTX550ti, and the install used to (slowly) go well, until after a reboot, when the display was corrupted, with what looked like two sets of the display tying to show the install progressing, blurred pixellated and allsorts…

On restarting again, the graphics card fan roared, until I shut the PC off with the mains switch. On restarting I’d get the error message that the install had failed, and would roll-back to 7.

To say I was miffed would be to be putting it politely…

I hear you on that one. I think rolling back to 7 was a really good idea for you in that case. I haven’t had any display issues that severe thankfully, but it sounds like a real issue with Windows 8 and the GTX 500 series.

A real shame, and more of a shame that there isn’t an official fix for this. :(.

The GTX 650 ti seems to be working just fine now on my system. My friend is sending me a copy of Windows 7 though just in case…

I’d love to go back to 8, alas my network dongle wasn’t too happy with 8 either.
