Sweet! SHIELD Tablet Gets Android 5.0 Lollipop, Valve Bundle, GRID Game Streaming

by Matt Wuebbling

We’re announcing today new capabilities and new content for our SHIELD tablet, coming with a major software update.

Android 5.0 Lollipop; a new bundle that includes one of the best games of all time, “Half-Life 2: Episode One”; and our new GRID on-demand gaming service – which includes more than 20 AAA titles – all highlight a major upgrade for our SHIELD tablet, rolling out a few months after its initial launch.

Powered by our 192-core Tegra K1 chip, SHIELD tablet has wowed gamers and consumers with its unique blend of performance, value and serious gaming chops. Several media have named it one of the top tablets to consider on their holiday gift guides and buying lists.

And we’re announcing three major updates that make the SHIELD tablet that much sweeter.

Staying Sweet

With SHIELD tablet, you’ll benefit from our commitment to have the latest and greatest software for your device.

And that’s the case with the newest version of Android. NVIDIA engineers are bringing the new Android 5.0 Lollipop to SHIELD on Nov. 18. That’ll make it one of the first tablets with Lollipop, and it will feature a new “material design” interface and improved app performance.

Also included in the update: SHIELD tablet’s preloaded Dabbler app. Besides a new interface inspired by Lollipop’s material design language, our painting software will offer full support for layers, and users can now share live Dabbler sessions over Twitch.

Half-Life 2: Episode One Comes to Mobile

One of the best games of all time – the iconic Half-Life 2: Episode One from Valve – is coming to mobile, optimized for Tegra K1 and exclusively on SHIELD tablet.

It will be part of a “Green Box,” bundled for free with the 32GB/LTE version of the SHIELD tablet. The bundle also includes Half-Life 2and Portal, two amazing games Valve already brought to the SHIELD platform.

Three of the greatest PC games of all time, available exclusively on SHIELD.

Also look for four new SHIELD-optimized games available through Google Play:

  • OddWorld: Stranger’s Wrath – a drifter turned bounty hunter is set loose in this sprawling action-adventure game.
  • Pure Pool – superb visual effects and multi-player action make for a sophisticated take on a virtual pool hall.
  • Strike Suit Zero – Born Ready Games’ space combat game features sprawling space battles gamers can experience on SHIELD’s 8-inch display or big-screen TVs.
  • Turbo Dismount – The legendary crash simulator is now on Android, with smooth full resolution 4x MSAA visuals on SHIELD tablet.

GRID Serves Up Amazing PC Games to SHIELD

Netflix for games? You bet.

We’re also announcing our GRID gaming service.

Netflix and Spotify have revolutionized how we enjoy movies and music.

With GRID, we’re bringing the convenience and variety of streaming to video games.

By connecting to state-of-the-art NVIDIA GPU servers, the GRID service delivers a GeForce GTX gaming experience on SHIELD devices.

The GRID service will be available in North America this month, western Europe in December and Asia next year.

GRID already includes 20 AAA gaming titles, including Batman: Arkham CityBorderlands 2 and Psychonauts, with new games coming every week (see “Netflix for Games: NVIDIA Launches GRID Game Streaming Service; Free for SHIELD Users Until July,” for all the details).

GRID will be free on the SHIELD tablet and SHIELD portable through June 30, 2015.

Is EP1 going to be optimized better for Shield Tablet, than Half Life 2? Or we can expect sudden fps drops to the lower 20s like in HL2? Also, are you going to fix these noticable fps drops in HL2 or Lollipop will take care of it?

  • Volodesi

So glad I have a pre ordered 16GB Tablet and don’t get EP1.

Are people who already bought the LTE version getting the Green Box too?

  • That Guy Bob From ReBoot

No. I already called them. I bought the LTE Model 2 days ago won’t fall in the promotional period.

When Tegra Note ( Xolo Tegra Note to be specific) will receive lolipop update.

  • Paul Petko

This is great to see NVIDIA working hard to bring Lollipop to the SHIELD Tablet. Continues to show how dedicated NVIDIA is to keeping their customers updated to the latest and greatest OS available. Plus the new & updated SHIELD based apps like Dabbler 2.0 and other specific apps that have received a warm Material Design make over. I can’t wait!

  • Paul Petko

I don’t want to forget to recognize the Grid service free preview ongoing until June of 2015. That is simply awesome. The fact you can enjoy PC based gaming and have it held on NVIDIA’s servers and not have to physically download to your device. I’ve been playing it and even located in Chicago half way across the country from NVIDIA’s California server located the game play is great. Virtually no lag spikes, slowdown or any issues. They have already stated East coast (USA), Europe and ASIA getting server service eventually so this will improve and expand to even more consumers in the near future! Way to go NVIDIA!

  • Paul Petko

I haven’t heard any news yet on the Tegra Note but there has been a confirmation of the SHIELD Portable receiving Lollipop goodness at a later date according to NVIDIA’s FB page by a NVIDIA rep in the comments. Given that the Portable and Tegra Note share the Tegra 4 processor you would think it should also see some love down the road.

  • ChangWizzle

I’m in the same situation. I’m seriously thinking about returning it.

  • Paul Petko

Nice promotion they are offering but I’m not sure if its fair to judge or return an item simply because it falls outside of your purchase window and the promotional offer.

  • kron123456789

Will be Episode One available on Shield Portable, too? And it would be great to see all The Orange Box on Shield 😉
BTW, if your shield is rooted you’ll be able to launch Ep1 simply(well, sort of) change HL2 files with Ep1 files(PC version) in /data/data/%gamedirectory%/files. The game would be almost playable. Almost:)

  • David Timothy

So, when does this promo period start? I just got my LTE shield tablet YESTERDAY! A bit frustrated as I’m a big Half Life fan.

  • Gary Jones

Had my shield for a couple of weeks now and can not put it down great product Nvidia you have done it yet again.

  • Chris Brown

I just got my Nvidia Tablet Shield 32Gb/LTE yesterday. How do I get the Half-Life games?

  • Fejér Mihály

It has started today, try to ask your retailer for the promo code, but you may have missed the promotion.
Worst case scenario if you really need those games free and your retailer will not give you a promo code for orders before today: send back the item for a full refund and order it again.

  • wahoo studios

Thank you so much for this awesome tablet 🙂

  • Al Williams

So when and where can we download the Loliopop updates?

  • ChangWizzle

Well, your certainly entitled to your opinion, but its my prerogative whether I want to return it.

Two weeks and I’d let it slide. Two months and I wouldn’t even bother. But two days is a bit too close. If they had just let me provide them a receipt as proof or offered a retroactive period like the current Pick your Path GeForce promotions, I’d be alright with that. But they aren’t. So my only option is to return it and buy it back.

  • Paul Petko

They haven’t released the details of it yet but I’m going to go out on a limb and say it will be offered OTA and possibly via factory image on NVIDIA’s developer download page.

Any love for Shield Portable owners? Lollipop? Episode 1? Oddworld?

    18th seems so far away…

  • [philth]

So does this mean Mount & Blade Warband will finally work on the Shield tablet?

  • iriman

Actually, the article says Nov 18th. Woot!!

  • Paul Petko

Yes thank you, well aware they said November 18th is when they release Lollipop. The question I was responding to was someone asking when and where can we download the update. I just noted that I’m assuming it will be OTA but there hasn’t been a mention of a downloadable image made available on that date. Never the less I’m sure will all be fine and enjoying Lollipop next week 🙂

  • http://gplus.to/larryortiz Larry Ortiz

    you don’t

  • http://gplus.to/larryortiz Larry Ortiz

i’ve learned the lte ota release is being hobbled by at&t certification so it’ll be months now.

  • http://gplus.to/larryortiz Larry Ortiz

Cause it requires att certification which means it can take months for system updates. Even though you don’t use it with att . bs

  • sam

Any update on release for 33gig LTE models?

Right now the focus is on getting Half-Life 2, Episode One ready for SHIELD tablets. Stay tuned for updates.

  • gkajhrgpuhg;ljkang

This is bullshit!, i just bought my tablet less than a month ago and now they are giving free games away with it. Current owners of the 32gb should be able to download those games for free

  • Chris Brown

where can one find the progress of the carrier certification process for AT&T?

I thought it was savvy to buy the 32Gb LTE version last week instead of the WiFi only. I don’t even have LTE service and did not buy from the carrier. I’m kind of disappointed that decided to get the premium offering since the WiFi model has already gotten the update without hitches.

  • Paul Petko

I would say its still in certification process. Reason being usually as soon as they get the thumbs up that its approved they push the OTA out ASAP. I would keep checking back here, NVIDIA’s Twitter feed for updates regarding the LTE update.

  • Paul Petko

It has always been a given that ANY device that has mobile data capabilities regardless of regular 3g/HSPA+ or LTE service, you are at the mercy of the carriers when it comes to updates. We saw this problem with the Nexus and Verizon/Sprint back with the Galaxy Nexus updates being held up due to slow carrier certification process because of the proprietary stuff. Its not the fault of the OEM, its basically in the carriers hands.

  • Paul Petko

I don’t think you will want to return to KitKat after giving Lollipop a chance.

  • Paul Petko

One thing at a time 🙂 Resource availability my friend. I saw on NVIDIA’s FB page back a few weeks ago they said the Portable would see Lollipop at a later date.

  • Nami

Where the heck is the Devkit board for 64bit K1? Hurry up Nvidia!

how or where can i get the original wallpaper that came with the shield tablet, the new ones in the lollypop update are dull and boring?

if your that bothered take it back and get a refund and no Nvidia dont and wont allow existing owners of the shield tablet to get the new bundled games for free, ill bet it doesn’t include trine 2 but as no doubt you cant uninstall those games at least 10gb of HDD space has been lost as HL2 on its own uses 4.28gb HDD space.

  • Jarda

After installing Lollipop I cannot copy data to SD card. Does anyone Javě similar problem?

  • Sam

Well I’ll likely be trading in the tablet. Learned my lesson. DO NOT PURCHASE TABLETS WITH CELL PHONE CARIERS. Also, I read a response to a post stating we are at the mercy of the carrier….… I thought I purchased an Nvidia Shield not an ATT Shield. Was it a marketing strategy to provide a larger storage capacity while castrating it upgrade wise with a carrier ? I love your products specially GPUs but c’mon y’all should have seen this coming and figured out a way to bypass it..…… I am willing to give away the carrier option on the tablet.

  • AL

Hey can you share where you found them, I dont Like the lollipop ones
