How NVIDIA GameWorks Helps Bring Back the Rainbow Six Squad

A few years ago, my son Carson had one of those obscure Halloween costumes you have to explain to everyone. Unless they’re a gamer.

He cut his hair short so it would spike up. He found an army green sweater and tan pants at Goodwill. He repurposed a one shoulder backpack and broken night vision goggles. We dyed his hair black and drew a 5 o’clock shadow on him.

If you’re a gamer, you’ll know this character: Sam Fischer, the grizzled operative at the heart of the classic Splinter Cell gaming franchise. Carson took his copy of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction trick or treating for good measure.

Carson’s Tom Clancy phase had begun. After playing Splinter Cell Conviction, he dipped into a few of my other favorites like Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Double Agent and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. And Carson’s love for the franchise grew when he played Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas and Rainbow Six Vegas 2.

Since then, Carson has expanded his repertoire to the Call of Duty Zombies games and Fallout franchise. But his interest in the Tom Clancy titles piqued once again with the imminent arrival of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, the first Rainbow Six game since 2008.

A Classic Franchise Gets New Twists

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege is a bit of a departure for the series. It’s an online multiplayer FPS. But it stays true to its predecessors by placing a heavy emphasis on teamwork, tactics and co-operation. It’s a proven combination.  

We’re working with Ubisoft to help add great graphics to the game. Two NVIDIA GameWorks technologiesNVIDIA HBAO+ (Horizon Based Ambient Occlusion), and TXAA (Temporal Anti-aliasing) — are worth highlighting.

NVIDIA HBAO+ adds realistic Ambient Occlusion shadowing and shading around objects and surfaces that occlude light. It offers a considerably-higher degree of precision than previous AO techniques. This helps scenes look less flat and more realistic.

TXAA is another technique that will keep gamers immersed in the action. TXAA is a film style anti-aliasing technique designed specifically to reduce temporal aliasing. That’s the crawling and flickering you sometimes see in fast-moving games.

We’ll also be releasing a Game Ready driver before the game launches. So GeForce owners will have the best Rainbow Six experience on day 1.
