Thomas Chen Helps NVIDIA Systems Launch Without a Hitch

by Carissa Atallah

Thomas Chen doesn’t just build servers. He builds trust. As a liaison between NVIDIA and its partners, Chen ensures that systems run smoothly from design to deployment.

Based in Taipei, Taiwan, Chen earned master’s degrees in electronic and biomedical engineering from research universities National Chiao Tung University and National Taiwan University. He then began his career in enterprise server system design, working on compute trays, storage and GPU servers. Starting off with a focus on board-level design, he gradually expanded into designing full systems.

When Chen joined NVIDIA in 2020, he jumped at the opportunity to work more closely with GPUs and AI infrastructure. As a senior application engineer manager, he acts as a bridge between external customers and internal NVIDIA teams.

“I help make sure NVIDIA’s AI platforms are solid and ready to launch,” Chen said. “I’ve always been inspired by what NVIDIA is doing in AI and hardware. The chance to work on platforms like NVIDIA GB200 and HGX, and to learn from some of the most intelligent engineers out there, really drew me to the company.”

Chen’s work spans design, validation, debugging and production ramp-up — on the production line and in data centers. He collaborates with teams to troubleshoot hardware and firmware challenges and improve factory efficiency. His team builds customer confidence by identifying and resolving issues early in the design and production processes.

“Every debug or fix really matters,” he said. “What we do makes a difference in getting things delivered on time.”

Chen finds it rewarding to tackle challenges, even under pressure.

“I’ve always liked digging into complex problems,” he said. “What motivates me is the challenge and impact of the work. It’s really rewarding to see our hardware running in hyperscale data centers and powering next-generation AI. The pace is intense, and I enjoy it.”

One of Chen’s proudest achievements has been his involvement in the NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 rack-scale solution, NVIDIA’s landmark full-rack AI platform. He led the initial power-on and debugging of GB200 NVL trays and accessory boards.

Unlike his previous projects, which focused on individual servers, GB200 involved full-rack design and deployment, making it a complex and rewarding challenge. His team played a key role in adapting support models and updating internal processes to meet customer needs during rollout.

“I helped track down some tricky power and firmware issues and worked with amazing team members to fix the problems, and that helped us ramp production and gain customer trust,” Chen said.

Chen finds fulfillment contributing to work that shapes the future of technology.

“For me, doing my life’s work at NVIDIA means being part of something bigger,” he said. “It’s not just a job, it’s a place where I get to create cool technologies and feel like what I’m doing really matters.”
