How AI-on-5G Opens New Opportunities for Businesses

Ericsson, Microsoft, Mavenir and Fujitsu among the companies showcasing their latest AI-on-5G solutions at GTC.

AI-on-5G is unlocking value in the enterprise.

Ericsson, Microsoft, Mavenir and Fujitsu are among the companies presenting their latest solutions for combining AI and 5G at the edge at NVIDIA GTC, running March 21-24. They’ll be joined by Google, Softbank and others in detailing offerings that address enterprise use cases.

Whether delivered as hybrid-cloud or on-premises installations, AI-on-5G builds on the increasing need to combine AI applications and enterprise 5G at the edge. The Global Mobile Suppliers Association reported in September that over 500 organizations have deployed or are deploying private mobile networks in 55 countries.

To help businesses seize these new opportunities, NVIDIA launched its NVIDIA AI-on-5G platform at GTC 2021.

The manufacturing industry, especially for automotive, industrial and electronics use cases, and the mining industry are leading adopters of the AI-on-5G platform. Their work reflects the increasing use of 5G private networks to support operational AI technologies.

With NVIDIA AI-on-5G, 5G provides secure, low-latency connectivity for billions of devices, extending the reach of AI applications to all connected objects. This opens up new use cases and markets to manage precision manufacturing robots, automated guided vehicles, drones, wireless cameras, self-checkout aisles and hundreds of other transformational projects.

NVIDIA AI-on-5G offers a converged, full-stack, GPU-accelerated computing platform, with a software-defined 5G virtual RAN (based on the NVIDIA Aerial SDK) running side by side with other AI frameworks, like NVIDIA Metropolis for intelligent video analytics.

The NVIDIA platform can be deployed on premises to be managed by enterprises or hyperscalers. Partners can engage with any or all of the full-stack assets in the platform, depending on their capabilities and differentiators.

NVIDIA Partners Showcase Deepening AI-on-5G Efforts at GTC

Ericsson and NVIDIA are delivering flexible, efficient, reliable and secure AI for enterprise applications over 5G networks.

At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this month, Ericsson and NVIDIA demoed intelligent video analytics solutions for telcos and enterprises.

At GTC, Ericsson will showcase how the companies are leveraging AI applications over an Ericsson 5G solution with NVIDIA-Certified servers to help enterprises automate operational processes, enhance workforce productivity and increase customer engagement.

“Ericsson and NVIDIA are working together to host AI applications and 5G connectivity on the edge cloud, bringing in a broad ecosystem of industry players to deliver use cases for enterprises,” said Eric Parsons, head of product development for the Cloud RAN team at Ericsson.

Microsoft will talk about how it’s building Azure private multi-access edge computing with the NVIDIA DeepStream SDK and Azure Stack Edge powered by NVIDIA GPUs on a private 5G network to support vision AI use cases. The GTC session will also cover how 5G delivers high-performance and low-latency connectivity for automation, customer experience and safety use cases with low-touch, no-code AI and machine learning.

Mavenir is building on its MAVedge-AI announcement, an AI video analytics solution powered by NVIDIA AI-on-5G. At GTC, the company will showcase how it is bringing MAVedge-AI to market to support intelligent video analytics use cases across industries.

Fujitsu and NVIDIA are using NVIDIA software-defined 5G to build GPU-accelerated next-generation virtual RANs. Building on Fujitsu’s recent MWC announcement, the company will demonstrate at GTC the benefits of a sustainable 5G vRAN aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions by over 50 percent, with improved efficiency, reduced CPU usage and low signaling latency.

“By leveraging Fujitsu’s AI and Digital Annealer technologies to optimize computing resources, the newly developed vRAN technology addresses one of the key challenges of conventional vRANs, delivering high performance with low energy consumption,” said Femi Adeyemi, chief wireless solutions architect and head of the wireless team at Fujitsu.

Other partners — including Google Cloud Platform, VMware, Radisys, Capgemini and LTTS — have also progressed their engagement with NVIDIA AI-on-5G.
